Learning Log

30/09/11

First day of the module. I met my learning team and were giving our first task. We have to design a powerpoint presentation on 'Digital Video Editing'

None of the members in my group are particularly knowledgable in this area so we will need to do lots of research!

We have allocated who does what (we are each researching different areas of 'Digital Video Editing) I am going to research special effects. We are meeting up on Wednesday with our findings to put the presentation together and practice before friday!

5/10/11
I met up with my learning team today to put our presentation together. I found out lots of information on special effects (blue-screen editing and CGI etc. ) We put all the slides together so they flowed well throughout the presentation, and ensured the information was not filling the pages .( informative bullet points). We have organised to meet again tommorow to practice the presentation after learning exactly what we are going to say during the presentation.

7/10/11

Today we did our presentation, it went okay, we all understood our Que's and what we were going to say. There was a bit of uncertainty, as we were not as confident as we could have been if wen did rehearse the presentation as a team.  The feedback from the group suggested more effort could have been put into the presentation to make it more aesthetically pleasing. The overall design of the presentation was pretty average, and we did not put much effort into designing it.  The images were also not all of good quality and looked pixellated on the screen. I will address these issues next time I am to have a presentation.

In the second half of the lecture we looked at website information reliability:

Source
Evidence
Explanation
Knowledge
  • consider the source
  • consider evidence
  • how does it fit in with the explanation of the phenomena?
  • evaluate the information with respect to prior learning
  • are they bias? (for example a website selling 'the atkins diet')
Website ending  following are reliable as they have an academic institution:
.edu
.ac.uk
.gov

Websites ending in the following should be looked at more warily as they do not always come from legible organisations.
.org
.com
.xxx
.tv

I found this excersise really got my thinking more about where I get my information from and how reliable it actually is.

14/10/11

We were given a research task this afternoon. I had to research an invention that has developed throughout the years to create the world of digital media that we now live in. We had to also use the library resources to get this information. I have decided to research 'Microsoft' as their development of computer programming has influenced so much of the digital world we live in today.

We then watched a presentation that explained the various stages to create a piece of digital media. (Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production.)

I have been set a task to create my own piece of digital media (PowerPoint presentation) on the research I collect about the development of Microsoft. I am going to draw up a few designs (colour schemes and layout) before working on the presentation as I want it to look good. I will also research into it's target audience etc.
I think I will base the deisgn of the presentation on the windows logo and system. (professional looking type, blue gradients, colourful imagery etc)

21/10/11

The presentation I created worked well with the subject. (Windows) It was professional, colourful, bold, and informative. Although I believe if I had put more time into the initial designing of the presentation it would have looked better.

Today we looked at advertising and it's affect on potential consumers.

Our major project is to rebrand one of the following products: Bluenun, Babycham, Meteus Wine, Skol Lager, Brut, Hai Karate,  and Milktray.

We had to create a short peice of interactive media.

Me and a partner created a website using Powerpoint on the Ancient Egyptians and the Pharoahs. We did some prelimary sketches and ideas before starting work on the peice. We ensured the type and images flew well throughout the peice, and that the website surved it's purpous. The colour scheme was black, beige and gold as we thought this invoked the power and riches the egyptians are remembered for. The front page featured a map of ancient egypt with the image of an egyptian cat statue overlayed (we created this using photoshop) Text was then added, we used a legible but 'egyptian style' font. The links were created in Powerpoint, we made them look like they were engraved gold (again into the Ancient Egyptian theme) I think the presentation worked well in surving it's purpous, but given more time we could have designed something much better.
